What’s driving the great health debate of 2009 is not a popular clamor for universal insurance.
“Many Americans are balking again at the prospect of health care reform,” writes pollster Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center.
A new Wall Street Journal poll found 41% of respondents opposed to President Obama’s proposals and 39% in favor (the rest were undecided). The underlying driver is politicians’ psychological quest for glory.

Alan B. Krueger, U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy
Even with this smoother-than-reality economic forecast, the administration is predicting that the federal government will run up an additional $905 billion in deficit spending over the next decade, almost doubling the national debt.
Krueger, speaking to reporters at a Friday briefing, said that while the administration’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecasts were largely in line with private estimates, numerous factors could affect and alter those estimates.
“It’s the nature of forecasting that forecasts typically are smoother than the realizations,” he said. “Your hope is that the ups and downs balance out and, on average, are on the forecasted path.”
What Krueger did not mention is that, while the administration’s projections are close to those of private economists, known as the Blue Chip Consensus, those private forecasts only extend through 2010, while the White House’s extend through 2019.
When asked by CNSNews.com if the fragility of the administration’s projections meant higher budget deficits in the future, Krueger said that deficits were inevitable during bad economic times.
“Deficits are inevitable when you’re trying to recover from such a steep recession,” he said.
Krueger also said that, because of that steep recession, it was impossible for the administration to produce a balanced budget in the short term, saying such an idea was not “advisable” for Obama.
“In fact, it wouldn’t be advisable to have a balanced budget at this point or anything close to a balanced budget at this point,” he said.
In the longer run, however, Krueger said that the administration planned to put the budget back on a path toward fiscal responsibility, saying that the country relies far too much on borrowing and not enough on public investment.
“One has to draw a distinction between the short run and the long run,” he said. “Certainly in the longer run the administration plans to put the budget on a path that’s fiscally responsible.”
“In the U.S., I think that we rely too much on borrowing and short-term consumption at the expense of longer-run investment, public infrastructure,” he said. “The president has said that it’s very important that when we emerge from this recession that we build a stronger foundation, one that’s less susceptible to these kinds of boom-and-bust cycles.”
However, the Obama administration’s projected budgets rely on what Krueger criticizes: borrowing to finance short-term consumption.
For example, the Obama administration projects that, as a result of its 2010 budget, the federal government will run a cumulative deficit of $9.05 trillion by the year 2019. In total, the government plans to spend $43 trillion during the next decade while taking in only $34 trillion in tax revenue.
In no year between now and 2019 does the administration plan to balance the budget. In fact, the smallest single-year deficit Obama plans to incur is $739 billion in 2015, after which time the deficit will begin climbing again until it hits nearly $1 trillion ($917 billion) in 2019.
However, Krueger claimed that it was a “very important” part of Obama’s budget to move the country toward “responsible budgeting” and a “more sustainable” path.
“That’s why it’s very important, in the administration’s budget, that we make the critical investments in human capital and physical infrastructure, responsible budgeting, health care reform, clean energy, to move the U.S. to a more sustainable economic path,” he said.
President Obama on January 29,2009 signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Bill and made remarks that included “…..it’s bad for business to pay somebody less because of their gender or their age or their race or their ethnicity, religion or disability; and that justice isn’t about some abstract legal theory, or footnote in a casebook. It’s about how our laws affect the daily lives and the daily realities of people: their ability to make a living and care for their families and achieve their goal.”
I don’t know a lot about this bill, I don’t know Lilly Ledbetter, and I don’t know why this legislation was passed, but I still have some thoughts I’d like to share.
All people working for the same person, doing the same job – same duties, same shifts, etc. – should be paid the same hourly wage.
I believe that for the most part, that is done. Everyone knows that two people don’t do anything identically, including their jobs. The person who does his job well and to the best of his ability is of greater value to the company than is a less dedicated employee, and I believe that most “discrimination” results from raises given to some, bonuses given to some, and some not receiving either . If that is the case, and discrimination raises its ugly head, the issue should get a really good inspection, and if it is found that the worker getting more was a more valuable employee, I think it should be the company’s decision to reward the more valuable employee without fear of any reprisal whatsoever. Was this bill truly the result of widespread discrimination against women, or was it a feel-good piece of legislation for the government to be able to toot its own horn at the expense of private businesses?
Let’s address the handicapped and employment. There are some jobs certain handicaps preclude their victims from doing, and this is not the fault of the business. If a handicapped person can handle the job as well as the next person without causing extra cost or stress in the workplace, he should be hired, if the employer wants him, at full pay, whatever it may be. There is no justification for paying less. If the employee sees he cannot adequately do the job, he should approach the business manager and ask about being placed somewhere else, and if not, he probably should resign and look for work he in fact can do. If the owner learns after hiring the handicapped person that he is not capable of doing the job, he is, in my opinion, well within his rights to fire the person or demote him as he didn’t live up to the agreement made at the time of hiring.
Let it be known I am NOT an employer, nor am I an employee. I feel that employers have for many years been treated terribly bad by their own government. Their government bows to unions in order to get votes while stabbing employers in the back. In addition to that , in order to get the minority vote, the handicapped vote, the women’s vote, the poor vote, our dear politicians have enacted some of the most convoluted self-serving “laws” imaginable hence, everything has become so politically incorrect that an employer probably has to carry a check list with him at all times to not offend this employee, that employee, etc.
We have had bad governments before, several times, but the one that exists today cannot be beaten when it comes to sleaze, pork, theft of public funds, irresponsible legislation that defies the US Constitution, and that ridicules and chastises the citizens of this country for expressing their views.
Let me close by just saying that I will be forever grateful that I am not an employer, not an entrepreneur, not in big business. Not because they are not noble, but because their government has incited so much hatred directed at them for no purpose other than to get a dirty, bloody vote that were I they, I’d do an Ayn Rand on them.
This morning I received an email from American Future Fund. It is something most taxpayers will want to read. It’s chilling.
This is the body of the email:
Last week, we told you how Obama’s tanking approval ratings were hanging like an anvil tied around the ObamaCare legislation, dooming it to a near-certain failure. So, the liberals were quick to adapt, and called it KennedyCare with the hopes of capitalizing on all of the good will and around-the-clock media coverage that engulfed the airwaves for the past few days.
So, why are congressional liberals so hell-bent on passing a wildly unpopular, government-run health care program? Because to them, it’s not even about health care anymore!
House Minority Leader John Boehner has uncovered explosive new revelations. You won’t believe what’s contained within the bill – it’s LOADED with special interest projects!
So, the liberals are desperate to pass their bill so as to bring home more power to the unions, trial lawyers and THIS:
Page 95; Section 205 – The bill directs the “Health Choices Commissioner” to conduct outreach activities, including through the use of outside organizations such as ACORN and others, to reach out and enroll exchange-eligible individuals and employers.
ACORN?! Unreal. Had enough?
How about this little nugget?
Page 53; Section 154 – The bill ensures that the new federal health care program will set a floor (but not a ceiling) for health care negotiations for unionized employers. The legislation cannot be construed to excuse them from good-faith bargaining over health care benefits. Furthermore, it will not permit unionized employers to unilaterally drop health coverage of its employees in favor of shunting them into the government-run plan or simply paying the penalty associated with not offering health care benefits to workers.
Can you believe it?!
With this bill, the liberals are intent on giving everyone power EXCEPT the taxpayers!
While you and I work each day, diligently paying the taxes that will foot this bill, the liberals in Congress have turned this bill into a playground for labor unions!
There’s more – this time it’s a nice kickback for trial lawyers:
Pages 533-551; Section 1412 – The bill requires the Comptroller General of the U.S. to conduct a study examining: “(A) the extent to which corporations that own or operate large numbers of nursing facilities … are undercapitalizing such facilities; (B) the effects of such undercapitalization on quality of care, including staffing and food costs, at such facilities; (C) options to address such undercapitalization, such as requirements relating to surety bonds, liability insurance, or minimum capitalization.” This provision primarily benefits trial lawyers who sue nursing homes.
Have you had enough yet?
This is what the liberals envision as KennedyCare. That’s some legacy to leave him, huh?
No matter how you feel about Sen. Kennedy, naming a pork-laden, special interest bill in his name is just plain wrong.
Yet, congressional liberals will stop at nothing until they can pay back their valued constituencies, no matter what the price – paid by YOU, the taxpayer.
Enough is enough. It’s time to put an end to Obama/Kennedy/GovernmentCare for GOOD.

Let me begin by saying that Barack Hussein Obama is the most horrible “president” America has ever elected. Obama is a collectivist / communist, and is using the force of government to pass laws which eliminate major choices which properly belong to free men as their birthright, forcing them to accept “cap and trade”, ObamaCare, the seizure of major corporations — banks, insurance companies, mortgage companies, automobile manufacturers — the list is growing to almost endless. Obama is an economic idiot, and so passes huge stimulus bills, tax rebates.
We have a Constitution which requires that a president be a natural-born citizen. We have the Judges and the entire Congress which have “sworn” to uphold it. Suits by citizens have been thrown out for “lack of standing” – why would not ANY citizen have “standing”?
For months now so many of us have found the evidence of Obama’s citizenship to be too skimpy to prove anything. The Obamanites have presented a non-vault BC which holds no verifiable or verified information of birth, such as doctor, hospital, footprint, etc. It was apparently filed by an (unnamed) relative who must have left some sort of affidavit, but we don’t get to see that, either.
Meanwhile the “birther” movement has grown and grown to a point where barely half in a recent Examiner.com poll believe that Obama is a natural-born-citizen. Yet only Obama knows the truth, and he’s not talking.
As this issue stands to this day, Obama’s natural-born-citizenship can’t be proven one way or the other. The country is in an uproar over this issue; articles appear constantly claiming pro or con, and it’s getting downright hostile out there. It’s also getting hugely tiring, right? But until this is laid to rest, the hostilities will continue to increase.
Either Obama shows his real BC or a court finally orders that he present it. This has been going on since before Election2008, with Obama doing legal pettifogging every step of the way, rather than simply putting a full BC on the table and letting America see the truth. His delays do nothing but reinforce the public view that he doesn’t show us because he is NOT a citizen. The real BC would state his real birthplace, which was probably in Kenya, not in Hawaii. Of course he will conceal the facts for as long as he is allowed to get away with that. If he should disclose the real thing, he would be out of office immediately, probably with a whole list of criminal charges against him.
It makes us all really skeptical that he and his cronies might manage to create some document and bury it in a vault somewhere for the day with the lights are turned on at last.
Obama, just show us the damn BC so we can move knowing that you are in, or you’re out!
GetLiberty.org >> Editorial: The Leaderless Revolution.
A revolution is taking place in America. It’s as intangible as the whispering wind. Yet as ineluctable as mounting gale. To the politicians, it’s still but a passing breeze rustling the hair at the nape of the neck. To the grassroots masses, it’s rushing torrent destined to sweep the elite from the Halls of Power.
America is at the very incipience of a Leaderless Revolution. One could see it at the hometown Tea Parties disclaimed by politicians as ragtag assemblies and disdained by Barack Obama who speciously claimed not to have even known they even occurred. One can sense it in the polls, as one after another shows plunging support for this president and his policies.
And one can hear it loud and clear in the angry outpourings at “Town Hall” meetings where sputtering politicians are driven from the podiums and forced to seek shelter behind a phalanx of guards. continue reading…
What with the Obama Administration’s frantic push for socialized medicine, a lot of people have come up with some unique ideas to justify its passage. One unique idea that strikes me is the old canard: The federal government is responsible for the “General Welfare” of its citizens, and having the government provide for the health care is in keeping with that responsibility.
I am in perfect harmony with our Constitution, and, yes, it does charge the federal government to insure its citizens “General Welfare”.   BUT…..
I accessed the CONSTITUTIONAL DICTIONARY
(see http://www.usconstitution.net/glossary.html)
I searched for ‘General Welfare’, and here are the results of that search:
welfare n. 1. health, happiness, or prosperity; well-being.
NOTE: (according to the Constitutional Dictionary)
Welfare in today’s context also means organized efforts on the part of public or private organizations to benefit the poor, or simply public assistance. This is NOT the meaning of the word as used in the Constitution.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think people do not understand much about our government because our politicians have denigrated and misused words and meanings so often and so vocally that they have created a populace that is totally confused. The sad part is that, in many cases, the politicians’ misuse of words is NOT deliberate, and this leads me to believe we elect some very, very dumb people to represent us and write laws for us, all of which deny us liberties we would otherwise be enjoying. Please do not misunderstand when I say dumb. I am not referring to education – I am referring mostly to character and sincerity which will lead anyone running for public office to learn the Constitution backwards and forwards.
Where is Liberty?
Given that every instance of collectivism…
Requires the Force of Government to initiate, regulate and administer; and
Eliiminates all rights of all individuals to determine and act in whatever they perceive as being in their individual best interest, and steals from the citizens whatever monies government, not the individual, deems necessary and appropriate, and
Eliminates the natural benefits of competition and choices always best provided by a truly free market, and
Sacrifices and removes all individual alternatives and incentives toward maximizing one’s life, then
Insist on an answer to this one Question:
The above was my reply to a TownHall post in Digg this morning, listing 10 questions to ask those who are pushing for, in this instance, Obamacare. The questions were great, designed to show any collectivist all the fallacies in this ruse but, as usual, missed the main point.
I have become simply exhausted and exasperated with every debate over so-called health-care or any other collectivist program deteriorating into a debate over
For many moons now, I have been writing about Morality, and more lately expanding to discussion of the Force and Sacrifice, as these are the basis of all governments, which have nothing to “give” except that which they steal from their citizens. This morality is not about some high-faluting worship of some lord or allah. It is simply our natural rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
This is clear and concise in our Declaration of Independence, yet so dispised and distorted and shredded within our Constitution. Over these 230 years, the collectivist / communist set have diligently set out to subvert these basic principles into a pity-pity society in which moral free market capitalism is said to be the villan, and that individual heights are to be subordinated to some nebulous “greater good”, productivity and self-reliance are less important than sloth, and the supreme “moral” value is to sacrifice one’s own life to anyone from anywhere merely because they hold out their hands and say “oh, pity me”.
According to the collectivists, each man, having his own mind and the unique human characteristic of being able to THINK, is now somehow to be denied that treasured characteristic and his mind deferred to any unknown other, who cannot prove and is not required to prove any superiority of Mind over You, the individual.
The brainless immoral collectivist “ethic” has now gained the foothold sought for at least the last century, and has set America on it’s long winding path to economic and moral devastation. America is leading the path to worldwide self-destruction, to such extent that we must question now whether humanity can survive.
You wonder why life has become poorer and holds little but nonsense and drudgery? You wonder why “Atlas Shrugged”? Well, at least we’ve got you wondering — the rest us up to You!
